A Blu-Ray drive (not Blue Ray, Blu-Ray was chose to be a trademark…. it might help if you google stuff if the "technological term" is right) can read regular DVDs. They cannot (with some specific exceptions) read HD-DVD disks.
When you say recorder, do you mean one of those set-to-box things that you hook up to your tv directly, or a dvd burner that you place into your pad? The pad ones are far, far superior in terms of write quality and versatility, though not necessarily as convient, depending on what you wish to use that dvd recorder for.
I found a dvd recorder buying guide (set top box kind) here: http://www.futureshop.ca/learnmore/buyersguide/en/dvd_recorder.asp?logon=&langid=EN&P= but it’s from 2005, so it’s much out of date and points to features, not specific brands.
Consumer Reports (unfilled by subscription and at your local library) would have done a test and pointed out the best one for your money.
